Herring Cove Beach Lifeguard Stand Painting by Poucher

"When Summer Comes"
Soft Pastel on Wallis Museum paper 9x12"
I was listening to Oscar Peterson ballads when I painted this piece, dreaming of a warm, summer beach so borrowed his song title for this one.

Poucher Daily Painting, Seascape, Blue Boat Reflection

Soft Pastel on Wallis Museum Sandpaper 8x8"

I'm back to painting my boats. It's nice to take a little break but it's the water that I really love to paint. On this one, you can see some of the warm rosy underpainting showing through.

Cape Cod Dinghy Low Tide Painting by Nancy Poucher

"Light over Dark"
Soft Pastel on Wallis Museum paper 8x8"
Available Sunday in My Daily Painters Gallery
Generally, with pastels, I work from light to dark. It's always easier to lighten a dark tone than it is to darken a light tone. When I laid in my foreground and reflection, I used my darkest Terry Ludwig pastels with plans to bring in some lighter tones on top. But I liked the contrast between the darks of the water and the light above. Hope that somebody out there likes it too!

Seascape, Tropical Beach Painting by Nancy Poucher

Soft Pastel on Wallis Museum paper 5x7"
Available for purchase at My Daily Painter's Gallery
Any questions? E-mail me.

Sometimes these grey November days get me dreaming of a warm, tropical beach and the aqua pastels come out. I like to use a pink underpainting with these tropical pieces to add warmth.

Arboretum Weeping Willow Painting by Nancy Poucher

"La Grande Dame"

I went to the Minnesota Arboretum on Tuesday for a walk and some field studies. The fall and winter months are ideal for observing how trees grow. Without the leaves it is easier to see how the trunks and branches twist and turn. The highlight of the trip was the couple of giant weeping willows with a perfect stone bench underneath their boughs. It's a magical spot in the late afternoon, a hideaway of golden light. I sat under the king willow to pastel "La Grande Dame"

Painting at Weir Farm

I visited Weir Farm on Thursday and did a little sketching. Weir Farm was the home of the artist J. Alden Weir, one of the founders of the American Impressionist movement. It is managed by the National Park Service and felt a bit like stepping back into a painting from the 1800's. They have an artist residency program and I dreamt of spending a month painting the farm, fields and stone walls of historic Connecticut. If you would like to learn more about Weir farm, here is a link:

Terns on a Sailboat

Soft Pastel 5x7"
I've finished with my 3 large commissioned works! So I'm back to my (almost) daily paintings. This was done from a photo that I took from my kayak. I imagine these little terns would not have posed long enough for me to finish a pastel.

Painting for French Television Show

Posted by Picasa
It was a beautiful day when the French journalists came to Provincetown to interview me for the travel show, Echappees Belles. I thought that you might like to see a photo of the spot where I painted "Dune Roses" for the crew. The segment is about artists and freedom on Cape Cod. It was a pleasure to meet and work with Virginie and Lucy. Thanks to you both!
