This little study went on quite the journey today. It began with a purple and yellow wet pastel underpainting. Working with a limited palette it went from strong colors to muted grays. It was scrubbed, wiped off, blended, glazed, hatched and somehow in the end returned to looking very similar to the original empty boat. I did enjoy the journey.

Just a little study to post today. The weather was warm this week (I'm in Minnesota) so took a little camping trip to William O'Brian State Park on the St. Croix river. I've whittled down the number of pastels that I bring with me when I'm hiking to a cardboard box of 60 Ludwig soft pastels and a few dark nupastels. It's great to always have my pastels with me but without the weight of a large wooden box, easel, etc. And I feel freer to create a little study rather than the more difficult task of a finished work of art.
